Among; those against whom summonses have been taken out -for alleged breaches of the: Municipal Corporations Act are several leading townspeople* The totol amount of whose accounts has not m the aggregate exceeded a 1 few pounds. A newspaper proprietor, leading draper, grocer, and a nurseryman are among the defendants. Some have taken legal advice, and have been informed there is absolutely- no defence to this action, the goods having been supplied; and the parties are liable. The Magistrate has no discretionary power m some cases, and even the defendants had no personal kribvyledgp that the goods had been supplied, and m no case were the defendants connected with any contracts, but simply supplied articles to order, or did work for the Borough Council, Hospital Committee or Domain Board. It is now stated that the amount m such case will be paid ( into. Court, , as according tb the Magistrates' interpretation of the A.c,t which has been upheld by the Chief Justice, the, parties are liable no matter to what body connected .with the Borough Council the. goods were supplied. In one case, the total amount of goods supplied to the order of the Borough Council for a number of years has not exceeded altogeher £60; and m some cases the amounts were only a few shillings. . v • - Later.
