The mine is situ • ated at (he east end of the Wallsend mine, and has a seam of good coal 14 feet thick. Invergargill, Thursday. At the Police Court, yesterday moi'ning three youths about sixteen years old, charged with throwing rotten eggs at a member of the Salvation Army, and otherwise illtreating him, were fined £2, each or 10 days' imprisonment. They went to gaol. Christchurch, Thursday. At the Hsspital Board meeting yesterday, a letter from the Colonial Secretary was read, stating that one Thomas McCleary had died intestate m Christchurch Hospital, and the Public Trustee, m order to administer the estate, had applied t« Dr Robinson, house surgeon, for a certificate of death. This Dr Robinson refused to do until be was paid a fee of one guinea, declining to sign the usual form of claim upon the Public Trustee for that amount. It was resolved that Government be informed that, m the opinion of. the Board, that the granting any further certificate than that for burial, is outside the House Surgeon's duties.' At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Shipping Company on Tuesday the Chairman, Mr Murray- Aynsley, mentioned that a communication had heen received from the Admiralty asking if the Company could arrange for 1 their officers to serva for a time on board men of -war, preparatory to their being placed on the naval reserve, and a recommendation lias been sent to the London office to cany out the idea if practicable. He thought that, as many of the Company's officers were New Zealand horn, the two years' experience they would thus have m the navy would be a great thing for them, and he had no doubt they would' be a credit to the Colony and the service to which they belonged. The New Zenland Shipping Company have received a cablegram announcing the arrival of the Kimutaka at Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 26, all well. The frozen meat was m good condition. The East and West Coast Bailway League Committee have decided to extend the membership to the general public and issue a medal to members. The extrance fee is fixed at 2s 6d. Two thousand five hundred medals are to be. issued at once. S. Laurie's store m Mechanics Bay, occupied as a storage depot by the Auckland Fibre Company. The hnildiug was gutted. The stock of fibre, twine, and hemp was destroyed. It was insured for £2000 m the South British and for £'2000 m the ' New Zealand. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The manger and two workmen locked up the store 20 minutes previously. A man named John Whatemanjbronght m from Rotorna after 14 clays' exposure on the Galatea Plains died on Tuesday at the Hospital from exhaustion. Wellington, Friday. The City Council last night unanimously decided to bring the Oontageous Disease Act into operation m "Wellington.
