PARLIAMENT.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. "WANT OF CONFIDENCE DEBATE. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, Thursday. The House met at 7.30 p.m. Major Atkinson said that before rnov-. ing the resolutions he should like to ask the Government "whether they would take one debate on the whole of the resolutions, or would they desire to have a debate on each i of the resolutions ? The Hon. Mr Stout.said it was a most extraordinary request for the leader of the Opposition to ask the Government how he should move a no-confidence motion. Major Atkinson said he desired to save time by asking one debate. If the Government did not wish to save the time of the country, it was not the Opposition's fault. He then went on to describe at tength tht position of parties m the House, and the position of the Governnient.in regard to their followers; The Hon Mr Stout replied at length. Mr Macandrew said he desirod to.move an amendment, That it is expedient that a discussion should fake place oh the Estimates m the form of a resolution, and that it is iriadyisable to raise the question of a new loan till the necessity for such loan has been shown, after the Estimates havebefcn, discussed. He thought that^ any change of Government, wpnld relieve the wretched condition of the country. 'He should vote niost heartily for it. Mr Wakefi eld also spoke against tho Government. ■ ' Friday. . Mr Montgomery said he had been . grieviously disappointed by the policy - of the Government; and when it was refused'to sanction the increased taxation, he thought the Ministry shonld.have re-- ' resigned on the ground that the House would not grant them the means they, wanted to carry on business. With re- ;„ gard to the proposal before the House, '*- he-thought it would have, been better -if the mover had waited, for the measures, as they came down, and take the sense of the House on them. He had given no pledges'to support the Govern-; ment, but he thought the. men should; have some fixity of. purpose. : He. hadbeen m opposition to Major Atkinson for •many years, and argued that that gentleman should be relegated to a non-officials life, and - the opinions ho, had then he held now. There was. an immense, strain put upon him .now fo-haa^^tt^pjte^-against Major-Hpuser-w&S^^fe^tMmis he ;^as votingto fec^t^e Government: m, -because: if a pEivdtp member tabled a Want of Conn' dence motion he would support him.
