A New Dodge.
The police of Sfc. Petersburg have been for some time puzzled by the comlucfc of a remarkable class of thieves, who committed robbery not only m the open day, but moreover, with ostentation. They were Finns, .•ind were all young men. When a nested, they caJ mly pleaded jjuil tv, find wore sentenced to imprisonment fpr terms varying from one to three months. At the expiration of the sentence they promptly disap r peared. It turned out that they had returned to thier own oountry and had there resumed thier several avocations wi hnut loss of social position. The law of Finland forbids the enrolment m t*ie army of any persons who have undergone imprisonment for civil otfencesjSo these r nterp rising Finns had deliberately sought imprisonment m m order to avoid conscription.
