OPENINGS- OF THE HOME INDUSTRY BRANCH. (UNJPTED PBEBS ASSOCIATION.) ' ; . Saturday, The Home Industry Branch of/ the New -Zealand Industrial Exhibition was opened at 3 o'clock this afternoon by.lus Excellency the Governor. The weather was fine,a>ut rather cold, and a fierce nor'wester wa* blowing.. The arrangements, which had heeri handed over 'from Mr Callis, ■ the secretary, to Mr A. (*. Johnson, gave little room for ; any complaint, and the unruly crushing which took place on the opening day was aHo»etUer avoided. Various Volunteer corps wete paraded to form a guard of honour, and also to bs used m keeping tfee main entrance, clear for. the passage of the vice-Regal party. The attendance is estimated at two thousand five hundred. Shortly after 3 o'clock his Excellency accompanied by Miss Jervois, Major Eccles (aide-de-camp), and Mr Pennefeather (pn'fcte secretory), > arrived, when they w^em«-t l»y,the Mayor and members of the Exhibition Committee, and conduoted to the ceremonial hall, the band playimr a fe>y btrs.of the National A»tb«?m. After |he;v*nthem had- been «one'ifirpii^», the Exibition . cantata, written and composed by Mr L> 8. Thoma«, was rendered m > most biiccessful manner, not a hitch occurring, and at the conclusion the large assembiaee allowed their*ppreciation by loudly calliug for Mr Thomas, who bowed his acknbwjedgm'ents-. ' Sit Julius .Xogel then made « lengthy speech. He cop'cliid»d by requesting his Excellency to declare the Exhibition open. SirvWilliwh Jefvois then addressed the assemWake, and declared the Home Industry branch folly opened. His Excellency resumed hi« seat amidst load^ npplawse. His Worship the Mayor called for throe cheers for hi« Excellency, which were heartily responded to. The Governor called for three cheers for Mr Thomas, after which the vice-Regal party visited this' branch tyf the Exhibition. The Exhibition remained crowded throughout the night, one of the attractions beingthe- Nelson Band, which is the second competing band.
