About 150 of the unemployed this morning waited on Mr Hales at the Public Works Office, who informed them he had instructions fr6m the Government to offer work at stone-breaking at Gd below current rates. It is expested that a large, number of men will accept Mr Kirby, contractor, has issued a writ for £2,460 against the Co ancit m connection with several contracts which, the Council terminated and completed at his risk. At a meeting of the Exhibition Committee to-day it was decided not to issue iree tickets to exhibitors, m honour of the industry branch. This branch will be opened to-morrow by His Excellency the Governor, who will deliver a speech and declare it open. Speeches will. probably be made by the Premier and the' Colonial Treasurer. The performance of the Industrial Cantata will also take place m the afternoon. In the evening the second competition iin the band contest will take place, the Nelson band being the performers. unedin, Friday. ] John Griffs while quarrying on the north side of Deborah Bay Tunnel, was killed while m the act of drawing a charge. His wifs and family reside m the Waikato. At the Education Board there was read replies which had been received to questions submitted to medical men on the question of ventilation. The replies varied very materially. Of thirteen who replied, six stated that they had observed Rome ill effects from want of fresh air. The replies as to cubic' feet required by each ohild ranged from 200 jap to 2100. The Secretary acknowledged receipt of £2 anonymously. hristchuboh, Friday. A three -roomed house, owned by Mr Galbraith, was destroyed by flre about 9 o'clock last night, and another cottage adjoining, belonging to Mr W. Moir, was gutted. When the alarm was given the Fire Brigade were at their annual dinner. They turned out very smartly, and having disposed of the flro, returned to enjoy their banquet. Both the houses were unoccupied. That m which the fire originated had been vacated by the tenant, Mr Donovan, yesterday, after the landlord had distrained for rent. There is no evidence as to the cause of the fire. 1 It was first seen breaking through tho roof ntar the chimney. Mr Galbraith's cottage was insured for £100 m the London and Lancashire Office, and Moir's m the New Zealand Company, but for what amount could not be ascertained. At a meeting of the West Coast Railway League Committee held yesterday, a rseoiution was agreed to urging Government to make provision m the Public Works Statement for nn early commencement of th« line under conditions that will admit of rapid progress. Th« meeting also appointed a ftnb-Committee to organise an extended membership.
