BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LAST NIGHT.
The usual meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was huld in Mr Lintoii's Auction Room last evening. Present— Tins Mayor, and Cra. Beck, Bcntlay, Wylds; J. King, T. King. Abrahams, Larcotnb, Grace,' Park, ana Hutuhiiison. . The mitmtea of last meeting were read ana confirmed. : ' . "■, Letter readf rdra. Wanganui Borough . Council, stating- that the quarterly, meeting of the Hospital Committee would be, held on Wednesday, 12th August. • ■ " From thfe Bank of Australasia requestin e to be inf or med if negotiations had fallen through with the Government, . before- resuming the matter with the borough. / ; ' : The Mayor read a telegram from. Sir Julius Vogel received that day, stating ! he had not had time to reply to the Council's letter, but would do so as soon as passible. T}io following letter, from the Mayor to. J. King suggested that in dealing with Sir . Grace BPconde.d,-that r . the Mayor and Town Clerk be instructed to communicate with Sir Julius Vogel, and ask whafc modification he ' deemed advisable in their Loan proposals, aud also that in - the mean time the Council hold over .action in any. other direction. Carried. The report from the Foreman of "Vyorks having been read, a discussion took place as to the supply of oats to the Council' ■ Cr J. King said he was in a position to supply from the^ Store as reasonably as could be procured '.._ elsewhere. The firm he represented, had never seen the color of the Councils money. He would suggest thatthe Fbraman go round arid get prices. The Mayor objected to this on the grounds that it would leave the Foreman open to.be. charged ■ with favoritism in accepting any. offer.; -The. -better way would be to caU for tenders. : Cr T.King proposed ; that tenders be called'for 50 sacks of oa.ts for horsefeed. Seconded by Gr Larcomb and carried. ~ Cr J. J. Hayns and was , to the effect that, the. statement made by Mr Hayns was a gross falsehood and he would give an ; emphatic denial to the same. He did not, favor Jones or anyono'olse. .As a mjttterof fact, he had ■Jones siied for breach of thp Impounding Act and Jones hail contributed 40 the funds of the Bdrongh cpnsiijlerablyi since h8 had been in office. Young-street. ; ; Kesolved— That the Council he recommended to pass the amount for payment > considsring the explanation satisfactory. The following accounts were considered and recommended for payment : — Roadmen's wages, £46 9s ■ 6d ; Town Clerk's Salary, £16 13s 4d ; F. Haines, poundkeeper, £4 3s 4d; T. Jordon, ranger, £5 ; H. The Mayor explained that before rescinding the former . xesolntion the report could not be adopted'., In the lace of this reply Cr Abnihams moved that the report be 6d opted. [Before going further we may be excused for stating that the, Finance Committee bringing up this suggestion re advertising consisted of Messrs Park 'and Abrahams both agents of the Times and Mr James King. Gr Grace said that the suggestion of the Mayor was the proper one, they could not in any case adopt a report which would nnlify a. former resolution of the Council without first rescinding that resolution, and to be in order a notice of motion should be tabled to do , thus. What Cr. Abrahams wautud them to do was impossible.Cr. Park thought that the report wight to be adopted.. The Council had power either \u adopt or refuse their rocbmm«ndation. .. Cr.
