Bucicland opposed the' BUI, and hoped the House would not agree to , its being referred tV the Natives Affairs Committee, as they would then practically affirm the principle of the bill. B|e objtjcted to th« committee system, and argued that the ■ greatest mistake made i i the past was ,the conduct of the Native Land Court, m which more money was spent than aptual purchase.. Mr Beetham objected to the Bill, as it/would pratically stop the ,sale of Native Lands m the North Is lands. He prepared pre-emptive light to a; measure of this kind, under which the Government retained all actual power. The statements made by the Native Minister to the Natives respecting taxation of their, lands were unwise, and left a wrong impression on the Maori mind; lit Bruce .supported the individualisatttJn' of titlej and would oppose the Mr Ballance m reply, objected to the : individualisation of the title,; which would lead' to an enormous expense. He denied the statements attributed to him regarding taxation on Native Lands. He agreed to refer this Bill to the- Committee, just, as other matters affecting other interests were referred to the Committees) Mr Moss withdrew his amendent, referring the question to the Royal Commission. ■■■'•'/ 1'The second reading was carried on a division by 35 to 14. ;< The House rose at 1.10 a.m.
