|; " Tho following from the Dnnedin Herald of last Friday shows that the work of perfecting the harbonr defences oE the colony is not to bo neglected :— " Major Boidaiu, Rear Admiral Scott, and Mr T,B. Low, of the Public Works Department, made an official visit yesterday to the fortifications at St Clair and Lawyer's Head. The Government have orden d 23 additional guns~lo of Bin/, and 13 of 6in. calibre~in order to strengthen the defences of the Colony. Six ot;these guns are intended for D»ne-din--four of theinto bo niounted at theBeach forts, antftwo;yat Otagt Heads. As some of tliese ! guns; are- shortly expected, the Work -of preparing for their mounting will be proceeded with at once." •'■■•• .;
