Fisher, who was employed at the hotel, ; is stated, ta have stolen if out of the prosecutor's bedroom on Monday night. The landlord of . the- hotel, suspecting accused, succeeded by threats and promises of money by inducing him to admit the theft and to take the landlord to a telegraph pole m the high road, at the foot, of which accuse! pickel up and handed him a match box containing" the note. The prosecutor, a man named Fiddler, was so drunk and • badly behaved m Court that Mr Allen, R.M. declined to take his evidence, and accused was remanded till Friday. >■"• : Haweka, Thursday. At a large meeting of settlers here yesterday a resolution was carried by a large majority in' favor. of erecting meat tinning works m Hawera County. The. New Plymouth, people are to be asked to ' co operate. A deputation waited on Mr Hankey, District Railway Manager, with a view to the revision of the railway charges on stock, most of which are at present driven by road./ The -deputation estimated the surplus sheep available yearly at 120,000, and the cattle at 15,000. ■ ■ ' Bsisbane, Thursday, j.A further official, visit was tnade to tho South Pacific Oil AVo'rks on Monday, last.
