THE SOUDAN.
Commenting upon the recognition to be accorded by the British Government of the services of tlie New South Wales Contingent, the Naval and Military Gazette suggests that, besides the usual' decoration, the Australian officers should be granted honorary rank m the British Army. Referring to the colonial preparation for defence, the same .journal remarks : — " These enterprising colonists have already established the nucleus of what will become one of the great navies of eastern and southern waters,. and m their defensive military measures they are already displaying a laudable prudence ; and without that " pressure ; ' which is said to be, unfortunately, necesBary m older communities."
