ARABI PASHA ON THE SOUDAN SITUATION.

» The -St. Jame's Gazette publishes the following as a translation of part of a letter written by Arabi Pasha at Colombo on the 2nd of march : — '• I grieve with a great crief over the decline of the Star of England, caused by her misdeeds m Egypt and the Soudan. But God has heard the cry of the opprossed and the voice of the blood which hasj been shed, and the terrible cry ot the widow and of the young children ; and surely He has taken His vengenance on the covetous. yefr, believe me, the people vof "Egypt 1 used to believe good. of the English nation. It was thoy.of all others that they trusted as the foremost among the nationß, and as the chief hope of those who sought to obtain their freedom, and they grieve now, seeing their belief a deception, and their trust a delusion. And what has England gained by her invasion of Egypt, and what m the Soudan ? Bather let us say what lias she lost? For God knows she has gained nothing. She has bat her good name, the friend- . ship of our lord the Sultan, and of all Moslems. She has lost, toOi Gordon Pasha^ through acting on false couusels, Stewart, and Hicks, and Earle, and how many other officers ; and she has lost all the respect of all hearts by :tnis war against free men m the Soudan. When will she cease to rush forward . on her course to send armies of revenge on meh who are themselves avenging their Egyptian/ brothers';'; oh men defending their country, .-and who deh'ght to drink th& cup of death rather than they should see an enemy left -withiji its borders ? I tell you 15;000,000 i^s^ch as these occupy at this moment thi^ipudan country andDarfour^ahd'all^f^&em are parti-, sans of the^Mahdi, havu^rimade a convention withfhim rihto deaih^ and m accordance with the preceptpb^ our noble Koran. Thus the Mahdi increases m "strength with the Englißh aggression." 4
