There was along discussion, after which the following resolution was carried unanimously : — " That this meeting heartily approves of the Customs tariff as proposed by the Colonial Treasurer, as it is intended for revenue, and also with a view of fostering and encouraging the development of industries and productions of this colony ."- The Secretary was instructed to forward , a copy of the resolution^tq Sir JuliusVo ff el. ~ -■■-■■■■- - -■-- " The following letter, signed by ten firms, has been sent to the Hon. Treasurer : — " Sir, — We, the undersigned importers and manufacturers of boots and shoes, beg respectfully to direct your attention to the following facts :— *(1) That the extra duty will not m the remotest degree improve or tend to increase the consumption of boots or shoes m the Colony, as the factories already m existence have been established sufficiently long to enable them to hold their own against imported articles. (2) That the old duty has already had the desired effect of completely shutting out many of the old lines that were formerly imported. If the new tariff aa introduced by the ! Government is carried, it will fall very heavily on the whole community, but more especially on struggling working men with large families." At a meeting of members of tho Corn [ Exchange to-day, a resolution was passed protesting against the proposed duty on coal. On Saturday Messrs Matson and Co. held a sale of agricultural land, when very satinfactoay prices were obtained. Sx. hundred and seventy-two acres at Lincoln, twelve miles from Christchurch, were sold at prices ranging from £13 to £22 10s per acre, realising a gross of £12,247 ; also, 115 acres at Southbridgo, twenty-six miles from Christchurch, at i £22 10s per acre.
