Sporting Notes.
(From the Now Zealand Mail, June 26.) . I have received from " Robin Hood " of honest .consultation fame, a series of photographs, advertisements, and other curiosities setting forth the advantages which have been gained by investing with the bold outlaw m the past, and. the benefits likely to accrue over a 4J4000 1 sweep he is organising on a racing and coursing programme, which close on the 7th of next month, "Facts are stubborn things." This is very concise, very short-, and yery true, and (I believe) very applicable to the firm who adopted it. There are two Robin .Hoods, I understand, whose cash hooks and payments exist as one ; and they have forwarded me their -photographs, with their signatures attached thereunto. Both of 'them are very respectable looking gentlemen ; and I have to express a hope that it will be long ere legislation deprives us of the pleasure ot investing with stich thoroughly reliable - and prompt-paying .sweep promoters. : Welcome Jack's absence from the Melbourne Cup has caused a great deal of astonishment (writes Augur). From Sydney I learn that the omission 'was purely accidental, but if this be truel can hardly understand how it is that his name appears among the nominations for the Caulfield Cup. He had been backed m New Zealand for large sums, and not so loug ago a commission was effected m his favor m Sydney. Mama's name was expected to appear, but Mr Inglis determined that he should have a fair spell, and therefore determined to reserve him for the Champion Stakes. Fonlsham tells me that he hears the son ; of St. Albans has done famously since he went to his owner's estate, and, all going well, he does not. seem to fear another meeting between Malua and Commotion. * ;
