Swindling Sweeps.
Under the heading "Swindling Sweeps" Mr Win. Goldsmith, formerly of Waipa wa, writes as follows: — Sir, — A lat» issue of the Mail has jiist reached me, m which an- advertisement appears relative to a sweep on the next MeibciiirhW Gnp, called " The Sydney Jockey Turf Club's Melbourne Cup Consultation 1885." My reason for troubling you with; these tew lines is to warn your many readers against investing t\eir money m this tempting: offer of the "S. J. T." Cs." It has been exposed frequently m the^ Melbourne press; (notably the Rpnrtsmcm) as ;a gigantic swindle,.,thß-money received by the so-called club. simply, falling into the hands of unscruplous individuals, never more to be heard of by .those who have speculated their pounds with the hope of winning thousands. " Jamas Wallace " (a mythical individual), the secretary, says that "about' 50 horses are nominated " for the, cup. This statement is just as true as all others m his advertise^ mdnts, as- nominators for this great race were only received on Monday last, and 162 horses were then entered ! In "James Wallace's words : — "N.B.— Please make known to your -, friends." My advice to intendingosweep speculators around Waipawa and elsewhere is — Invest your money with geople near home, and give Australian sweeps a very wide berth, for not more than two m a hundred of them are genuine. P.S.— Since writing the above, I have received the Spoi'Lvnan of this morning; m which another reference is made to {lip above swindle, some Indian subscribers asking for information about it,. ;ihe 'writer- (" Vigilant ") concluding- his remarks as follows : — "I wrote so strongly concerning; this transparent flwiuale some months oack that I ! need now do no more to reiterate, for the benefit of our Indian subscribers that no aiiQh institution as the Sydney Jockey Turf Club exists m Australia, and that every farthing', provided by Mr " Wallace's" constituents will unquestionably find its way into the pockets of the promoters and remain there." ■'' ' J '
