'Thb Timaru Herald writing on the Financial , Statement, says :—- -" Specious and astute as is. the Statement, however,, we. think the Colonial Treasurer has, a little overshot the mark, lie lias presumed rather too much on the supposed ignorance . anjd credulity of the ; Hppse andxtf .-the public. The speech is painfully ,clisingcnous It is clearly apparent, at times, that even the author is laughing m h s sleeve at his own audacity, arid is wondering m his own mind whether his hearers will be simple enough to swallow some of his statements. There is something positively delicious, for instance, m the way m which one long-forgotten old fallacy, which an intelligent boy of twelve would laugh at, is first thrust forth with an air of wisdom, and then drawn back again, as if the Colonial Treasurer was ashamed of himself for having suggested it. We refer to that part of his speech m which he first assumes that a protective duty is paid by the foreign producer (!) but immediately afterwards, adds that " the proposition is iii no way affected by the question of whether the ultimate charge falls on the consumer rather than on the producer." We fancy the consumer twill be of a totally din\?rehfro'p'ihf<m / , and will consider that it-does matter, a very great deal.""
