OPINION OF THIS PRESS ON AUSTRALfAN LOYALTY.

The Daily Telegraph m a leading article this morning, upon the return of the New South Wales Contingent to Sydney, remarks the terms of dignified congratulation with which Lord Loftus welcomed the arrival of the troops as quite befitting the occasion. The writer dwells strongly on the enthusiastic loyalty to the Queen ,anJ the soldiering qualities displayed by the Australians during : iterations m Soudan, and concurs with Lord Loftus m believing that the ac'ion of Australia m despatching troop* to the assistance of England has practically established imperial federa-j tion and has given the world an assurance of the worthiness of the Australian colonists to be reckoned an integral art of the British Empire. Sidney, Saturday. Several metropohan journals to-day contain references to the demonstration at Sydney, on the occasion of the return, of the New South Wales Contingent from Egypt. , . . The Daily Chronicle eulogises the speech delivered to the troops by Lord Augustus Loftus, as an address worthy of the occasion,, and observes with pleasure that a well-merited compliment was paid by His Excellency to Colonel Richardson, and the force under his command.
The Pall Mall Gazette rejoices to see the; spirit which- throughout animated the contingent and points out that the, new cabinet jias splendid opportunity for turning to account m the defence of the .empire the patriotic feeling of the colonies. The water urges that, a well-consi-dered scho-ue of colonial defence. should at once be submitted for the consideration of t lie various colonies. • The Globe regards demonstration at Sydney as gratifying testimony of ..the loyalty and patriotism of. citizens of New South Wales and furthermore conr aiders the presence of accredeted representatives from all adjoining colonies as evidence that the force of public opinion is turning m the direction of federation. / • • . : Sunday. __ On«rof^fie"members of the contingent who had been invalided since the departure from Egypt, died yesterday.
