The Bruce County Council has passed a resolution that additions to the burdens of the country settlers, either by increased duties or by further direct contributions to public service, are to be deprecated as hindering settlement. Dtjnedin, Friday. At the City Police Court to-day, Lawrence White, of Nenthorne manslaughter notoriety, was sentenced to 14 days bread and water for mutinous conduct. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting this afternoon the following resolution will be proposed : — " That this Clumber, having carefully, examined the Customs tariff, considers that duties imposed on good.: imported should be levied for re venue purposes only; 1 and therefore object to any increase that bears unfairly upon' special classes ; and that the additions proposed to be made on the produce of industries already established m the Colony are unnecessary and unwise m principle, and if operative will unfairly burden theiworking classes."
