AS OTHERS SEE US.

The affairs of- this Colony are always of interest to our neighbours, as is shewn m the following- extract from a Melbourne journal : — The period of commercial and financial depression m New Zealand has been one of great length and severity,

and the greatest interest is naturally given to the question when brighter prospects may be expected to present themselves. It is satisfactory to see thwjtVthiß latest statistics of the colony supply information cheering to the hope that a better time is near at hand The quarterly returns just gazetted show a satisfactory decrease of advances, and an increase of investment m Government securities. This would seem to show that nionev was becoming much easier in 1 New Zealand. The customs returns show a small increase. The agricultural returns are not yet complete, but the estimates made show a large decrease m the acreage and aggregate yield of wheat, which is -about counter balanced by a very large increase m the acreage and total yield both of oats and barley. The result is that the colony will export 2| million bushels less wheat, arid about 1 million bushels more oats. than it did last year. The estimated average per acre for the colony 1 is . nearly 25^ bushels of wheat, fully 35 bushels of oats, and 3$ bushels of barley ; averages calculated to make a Victorian farmer's mouth water. •
