Thompson gave notice that on going into Committee of Supply hi» would move, " That as regards the incraat- v. m the Customs revenue for the current, year, which was estimated to amoiiht'to : £89,000, this House is of opinion that instead of increasing the duties of Customs - with the view of realising this sura, Irtish sum should be raised by increasing property assessment m the case of pfl>^> perties of the taxable value of £10,000 and under £20,000 of one penny m -the £ and case of properties of taxah)e~ value of £20.000 and upwards to' l&^n the £." Replying, to questions it was stated that" 'the Government would consider whether they could take any steps for m:i;ntaing training ships for neglected children; . ...... . 't That a clause would be inserted m the" Land Bill for dealing with the ungranted sections of land originally selected under the New' Zealand Settlements Act. That the question of. relaxing the regulations uuder the Arms Act respecting the purchase of ammunition by Eurc-^ peans m the North Island would be considered by the Government. That where Inspectors of Police. w.«re doing their duty it would be unwise to .. remove them unless for special reasons. That the Wellington Resident Magistrate had been instructed to go as .far as Otaki m his Magisterial capacity. That if a general election took place before another ses.sion Government would introduce a bill for extending the hours of polling at Parliamentary elections. That Government could not guarantee payment of life insurance policies *Of foreign insurance company.
