A Narrow Escape.

.' ■■■: ■-.■-. h : ~ — - m ■...■■' ■• •■> •'• . : In a Wellington paper was the following :— What might hay« been a terrible accident was within an ace of occurring yeßter"iJftv old the Wellington- Mtihavratu t^iliyay [Mp» ji^ove Kaivrarra^ jowjrig to culpabla negligence of some person* m the employ of the company. The line is not yet open for traffic and it is rather a favourite Sunday afternoon . walk for ■people to stroll from Kaiwarra to Grofton. No notice has been given of any trains running oi 'against trespassing on . the line, and yesterday a great many persons as usual went along it. . Just as three young women- and some; children had entered one of the tunnels some people -outside were horrified to observe .an engine and one or two carriages come 'down the line at a very ' fast rate, and without whistling, dash into the tunnel, The women then' saw the danger, and screamed loudly. Then suddenly all was still. A couple of young men rushed m expecting to find the mangled bodies of the .women and children but, fortunately,, tone of the former,' arid the ' y'qungsterfj had 1 found refcrge; m and th«'two other girls, With" great presence, pf, mind, had straightened themselves up against the wall, and remained motionless while the train swept by. It was a Very narrow escape, and -of course all were' terribly frightened, the spectators almost as much as those who ' had so narrowly escaped. It was a most rockless thing to run a train down from Johnson ville without notice, and to enter a tunnel without whistling was, we believe, contrary to all railway rules. .
