Narrow escape From Fire.
On Wednesday morning the bakehouse belonging to Mr Whitehead's bakery establishment m Main-street had 1 a narrow escape' from being consumed by fire. Mr Whitehead informs us that a bale of feathers belonging to Mr Vei)n and which had got damp m transit, 'allowed to stand over night on >the;oven to-dry.. At 10 , minutes to 4 m tjie morning, as the baker was preparing !for work he heard a crackling noise m the bake house, ana only just managed to get there m time to prevent the. plade being demolished. As it. .was, a ..considerable . -amount . of damage . was caused. The feathers had; caught fiye ; and were burning., rapidly ; tuie sides of. the house were burnt through! m places', and the heavy weight of about 20 tons of flour stored overheard only prevented the flames getting through the roof. The united efforts of Mr Whifcehead and .his man, were however, rewarded, and serious consequences averted. The feathers destroyed were valued at £10.
