A private telegram from London states that the difficulties between the vendors of the Patetero Block and the purchasing Company m London have been settled. Captain Fairchild, of the Hinemoa, today lifted one of the submarine mines at the North Head, at the request of Colonel Whitmore, to be taken to Wellington by the Hinemoa for exhibition. A valuable steam threshing machine of Mr Archibald Wallace, Cambridge West, has been burnt by incendiarism. It was insured m the Norwich Union for £200. James Dunn, ex-burglar, has been committee] for larceny. An old' woman handed over on the arrival of the Manapouri from Sydney for travelling without a ticket, appeared to be a foreigner, She could give no name pr information. Hutchison, who is wanted m Dunedin on a charge of fradulent bankruptcy, was arrested here to-day on arrival of the Manapouri, from Sydney. DrrNEDiif, Wednesday, The police are making inquiries concerning a man who succeeded m victimising several persons. He represented himself as a theatrical agent, and advertised that he was willing to receive applications from parsons desirous of going on the stage. His lodgings appear to have been rushed by young ladies and men ambitious of a stage career. To these he represented that he was agent for Messrs Williamson, Garner, and Musgrove, and from all whom he engaged he took a small sura as a guarantee that they would fulfil their engagements. Some twelve persons are known to have been victimised. They were all to go to Melbourne by the boat last Friday, and the agent whose name was given as A. W. Porter, was to meet them and give them their tickets. Those victimised proceeded to Port Chalmers after several tearful partings from friends, but the agent was not to be found. Porter is supposed to have departed m the direction of Invercargill. Inveroargill, Wedeaday. A meeting of grain shippers was held to-day to discuss the inadequate ship- | ping facilities supplied at the Bluff by tho Union Steamship Company for the I carriage of grain to "Australian ports. It i was stated that nearly 1000 bags of gram were now lying at the port awaiting shipment, aud suggested that a special stoamer should bo chartered for its importing and export, Ultimately- the following resolution was carried: — " That m the opinion of tUis meeting the weekly provisaion ot space for grain m the outward Melbourne steamer has beeu totally inadequate throughout the season to the requirements of the port, and that a strong representation be made to the Company to clear off acciruiilated stocks and to afterwards make a fair provision for the port, "
