The Jane Douglas.
The Manawatu Go-operative Steam Shipping Company's screw steamer Jane Douglas, Captain Fr.iser, is announced to leave Foxton for Wellington to-morrow (Wednesday), at 10 p.m.
In his report of the Danevirke Hotel to the Licensing Committee, Constable McGaughran said the hotel when completed, would be one of the largest between Napier and Woodville. Wanganui borough auditors are paid ten guineas each per annum. The fee heretofore has been fifteen. There have been six alarms of fire during the past year m Patea. The fire brigade balance-sheet showed £82 receipts and <£62 exnenditure for the period. A grand vocal and instrumental concert takes place on the 29th inst. under the auspices of All Saints Church. Mr Haultain, we are pleased to notice, is once more able to attend to his duties. A committee meeting of the Dramatic Society will be held at the Club Hotel this evening at 7.30. At last night's Fire Insurance meeting, Mr' Hawkins very properly had a definite arrangement come to as to payment of expenses. He evidently had no wish to see Mr Walton treated m the same manner as Mr Fenton has been over the election expenses. An approving smile flickered over upon the faces of those present, excepting the chairman (Mr Park) who appeared not to relish the reference. Mr Keeling wired yesterday to the effect that financial matters would not be concluded till Thursday, and he expects to return by Friday, also instructing the Deputy Clerk to call the Borough Council meeting for Friday instead of Wednesday as usual. There are 54 licensed houses m Wellington. The total number of beds available m the various hotels is 737. The first general meeting of the Cooperative Stoam Shipping Company will be held at the Sample Eoom of Whyto'a Hotel, Foxton, on the 27th inst, at 2 p.m. to elect directors, and appoint an auditor. The Auckland Herald narrates tbe following :— On Saturday morning the child of Mrs. McLaren was severely bitten by a savage do? (owner unknown) m Gun dry-street, Newton. The brute bit tho little girl m the face, tearing a trianguhi flap of skin and flesh from above the eyebrows to tho nose. She was promptly attended to by Dr. Evans who brought the injured parts together and stitched them, bnt rhe child suffered very severely, not only from the wound bnt from tbe shock to her nerves. A piece of almost unparalleled lnrrikinism, which it is supposed was intended for a joke, was reported to tbe Taeri Advocate a few days ago. On tbe occnaion of a wedding at Maungatua a dance took place iv the evening m a barn. Next morning a quantity of blasting powder wns found under the flooring, with a half-burnt fuse lying near it, which had evidently gone out prematurely. Tho Advocate adds : — "It seems hard to believe tbe statement but our informant declares that it is a fact, and that tbe matter lias been placed m the hands of the police. If such be the case, wo sincerely trust that the culprits will be detected." Mr James Laird well sustains th* name he has gained as a most successful nurseryman. We notice that a Wellington firm advertises a sa J G of camelias, azaleas, roses, ornamental shrubs and forest trees, from Mr James Laird's nursery.
