Trade is m a state of stagnation, work is scarce, one failure succeeds another, even upright and L far-sighted business men are ruined, and the credit of the country is being undermined. A cloud, too, is creeping above the political horizon , which may be fraught with very disastrous results. . In consequence ot ibe calamitous war m tho TranHyaal,; England has lost considerable prestige m the colony. The supporters.of the Dutch party, who constitute two-thirds of the entire white population, and number m their ranks' the great majority of the mem-hei-a * *ef . Parliament, are warmly attached to the Transvaal and Orange Free State ; they are strongly opposed to the Britisli policy, hate the natives, and contemplate nothing less than a separation from England and the foundation of a new Republic, to be styled 'The United States of South Africa.' Should this -movement, with which many clergymen of the Koform«d Church sympathise, succerd, the position of the' .natives m South Africn, may .become no better than that of fcfiei Indiaus m the United States ofNorth America."
