Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. MONDAY, JUNE 15, 1885. DAIRY FACTORIES.
Writing upon; the proposed establishment of the formation of a public company at Hawera to work the cheese factory of Messrs Iredale Bros., a correspondent of the Patea Mail makes some very sensible suggestions with regard to the advantages of dairy farming, lie writes : A very nice thing ; a cash balance up every month instead of the old barter style of taking it out at the stores. Milking is not fashionable on this coast, but 1 think during these hard times people will be strongly tempted to go m for a few cows with the cash inducement. The most fashionable labour ( ?) amongst our settlers is attending each and every cattle sale, with a whip under the arm and a pipe m the mouth. They call it farming ! Nine-tenths of them mortgaged up to the eyes, complaining at the bad times, and yet wasting the best part of their days lolling about the sale yards. The amount of butter, cheese and bacon exported from the Patea and Hawera counties is ludicrously small, as compared to the capabilities of the district. What a mine of wealth lies untouched ! Awake, ye lazy farmers, and take a lesson from your Taranaki neighbours, who have not the natural advantages that you have, m the way of rich soil and pasturage. Their export of butter and cheese is no mean thing every year. A visitor to the Hawera district from the Wairarapa speaks very favourably of the good effects resulting from the establishment of dairy factories there. He says that not only has the value of land increased, but that greater prosperity among the smaller land-owners is generally evident. The prices for cows also shows a marked advance. Not only is the demand much more regular, but instead of the prices for ordinary cows ranging from £2 to £5, they now run from .£4 to £8 It may be remembered that Mr Wm. Reid reported a like improvement m the affairs of suppliers of milk to the Okoia (Wanganui) fact tory ; consequently, it may fairly be i assumed that the regular weekly payments for milk, if factories are established m this district, will produce like good effects among the small farmers m this county.
