Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. SATUEDAY, JUNE 13, 1885. LAND ON SALE FOR CASH.

-Q At a meeting of the Wellington Waste Lands Board on Thursday Mr Buhny moved that no land be sold for cash for a period of twelve months. He said it was time some action was taken to prevent all the lands being mopped up by a few rich people. Mr McCaudlk seconded the motion. Mr Mason would oppose the motion, if it was to be made a permanent regulation. None of the lands at present offered for sale were likely to find purchasers. Mr Beetham drew attention to the Act, and Mr Bonny said he would soon have an opportunity of amending it. Mr Fitzherbeut argued that the Board had not the power to withdraw the land from sale for cash. Mr Beetham believed that the motion was ultra vires, though he believed it was much preferable to hare the land sold on deferred payment, or leased under the perpetual [easing system. Mr Bunny wanted to put a stop to people mopping up all the land. The cash sections were taken up on speculation. They were then sold to the deferred payment holders adjacent, who were compelled to improve at high prices. Mr McCaudle said he had no. objection to the land being taken up for cash, if the holders were compelled to improve like the deferred payment settlers. Absenteeism was the curse of the North Wairarapa. A lot of land had been pnrchased for cash eight or ten years ago, and no improvements whatever had been made up to the present time on a large number of the sections. Mr Beetham pointed out that whatever action was taken by the Legislature nothing was likely to come of it for a period of three months. The Chairman suggested that the Lands should be classified afresh. Mr Beetham did not know of any lands open for cash that he would like to pay 10s an acre for. Mr Bunny having consented to add to his resolution the suggestion made by the Chairman, and having altered the time from twelve to three months, the motion was put and carried. Ayes: Messrs Mason, McCab.dle, and Bunny. Noes : Messrs Beetham and Fitzhkubert.
