Meeting of Ratepayers.
At noon yesterday the Road Board suspended its sitting to hold the meeting convened re the disposal of the road known as Waldegrave's Road. Tb»f* was about a dozen ratepayers present end the matter was discussed on both sides pretty plainly. The chairman, Mr G. M. Snelsoa, having read the Act referring to the question, called on the ratepayers to speak for or against the proposal. Mr Sly proposed that the road b* closed. He pointed out that the residents affected by thi3 road were three m number, and that none of them had tho slightest objection to its being closed. Mr Jenssen proposed as an amendment that the road be not closed, and pointed out that this was the only highway i> certain properties m the Fitzherbert district and that if closed it would on)/ ontail on the Board the necessity of making another road. Mr J. Mcß wen seconded, the amend* ment. ' •/ I Mr Jenssen also pointed out that tills road was the only one leading to a fordable crossing of the Manawatu River. Mr Buick contended that the road might be of great use m tho futurtr *M that if at present it was no expense to the Board this was the very reasov H should be kept open. Mr Mathieson agreed with the last I speaker and thought the road ought to bs 1 left open. .^1 ; Mr Edwards also was m favor of ths road being allowed to remain. Mr Jenssen stated that a good many thousand feot of timber had gone over the road during the past five' months and that he was m anticipation of a good deal of traffic m the same direction m th« future. The chairman thought it was s pit/ that the opposition to the disposal ofthj road had not been shown earlier when tb> Board might have been saved a good day} of expense. . -..:.=■« Mr Pratt seconded ths resolution. The amendment was put and carried. tho voting being 8 to 1.
