The origin of the fire is unknown. Timaru, Wednesday. At, the Supreme Court, Trengrove, charged with assult on hit wife, was found guilty, and sentenced to three years' hard labor. The criminal business is now concluded, and the civil business commences to-morrow. Dunediv, Wednesday. The sum ot £880 has been handed to the University for founding a women's scholarship. The sum was raised by subscription, and handed over with a request that when £30 a-year ia derived from it, a scholarship, open to women, be founded. Christchubch, Wednesday. The Salvation Army has juit concluded the purchase of a property m Srdenham consisting of a five-roomed house, with about half an acre of land attached. It ia intended to use the house' as quarters for the captain and to erect alongside it a large hall. The total cost of land and of the construction of the hall will be about £1100. A telegram has been received that Marshall Booth, son of General Booth, who das supreme control of the organisation m the Southern Hemisphere, has left Melbourne for New Zealand, via Hobart. He will probably stay a week m the latter city, and may be expected here about the end ofthepresont month. On his arrival a start will be made with the erection of the central barracks, opposite the Supreme Court, Christchuroh, which are expected to coat i"2000. A public meeting was held to-night, under the chairmanship of Mr WynnWilliams, and passed resolutions m favor of Government taking measures to facil itate the settlement of working men on the lands, and introducing cheap money m accordance with Sir Julius Vogel^j scheme.
