The Wellington Manawatu Railway.

The statement that " the Government havo , at last arriyed • at . si, definite arrangement with 'the, Directors : of the Wellingtou .and Manawatu . Railway Company for purchase of that railway by the colony " is entirely incorrect. No such settlement has been arrived at. Negotiations between the Government aud the directors have, as we announced some time, ago,, been proceedingj and the., general outlines of an agreement been arrived at and embodied iv a draft. This draft has since that time been passing, to and fro between the directors and the Government, the latest phase being that the Government have inserted c«-r---taiii conditions which even the majority of the directors favourable to selling are very unlikely to accept. The Board is by no means unanimous as lo the desirability of selling at all, and it is known that there is a strong body of shareholders altogether opposed to the aale. The tenor o£ the latfist advices from the directors -m England is also, we understand, entirety opposed to selling, and of such a nature as to afford good grounds for belioving that any funds required to enable the company to complete the railway, can, m the present state of the money market, be easily obtained, without any aid from the Government. Under any circumstances, the sale cannot be made without the full sanction of the shareholders. —Wellington paper.
