Singular Charge of Fraud.
The Lyttclton 'Times says that the i charge of conspiracy to dafrud the Go» vernmant, which was preferred against nine railway employes at Lyttelton on Saturday, appears to be of a serum nature. The alleged conspirators are a timekeeper, who was employed for a number of years by the department, and several workmen whim he had to check. Tt is stoted that the timekeeper h: : d to tfive tickets to the labourers every morning, and they were supposed to go and work at the stores, and elsewhere on the railway premises. The men were to bring their tickets back at night, whtn the timekeeper's duty was to mark on them the number of hours which the bearers had worked. It is alleged that by an arrangement between the time* keeper and the men, the latter, after receiving their tickets, went to private work of their own, but returned in the evening and had their tickets marked, c-t if they had been working all day on the railway. By this means it is supposed that Government has been defrauded of a considerable sum.
