Owing to the prevalence of boisterous weather at Wellington the departure of the X.M.S. Tonsrariro, for London, has been delayed, but slie would probably get away lute last night or early this morning. The Tongariro takes 1(5.5 passengers and a full cargo, including 15,000 carcases of mutton. We learn that the Borough Treasurer now declines to sign' cheques for the Borough until the risk he runs m so doing, as being a contractor with the Council, is defined. Gr Park's and Abrahams' references to illegality have been the means of raising issues, the outcome of which is difficult to fare see. There is a very strong feeling abroad against the action of the two Crs who made themselves so officious m objecting to the account for expenses m connection with the poll for the Borough Loan. We should strongly recommend them, i£ they value public opinion m the least degree, to withdraw their ill-timed opposition and forthwith sanction the payment of the account. The ratepayers are indignant that two Crs, neither long m the Council and one only a recent arrival, should take so much up >n themselves, and act such an autocratic part. We think both should should tender an humble apology to the person who has been caused annoyance by their action. They should frankly admit, that ihey had acted mdi.v erectly, ;isk him to look over it and not think any loore about it. We shall be glad to hear that the. two Crs referred to avail themselves of our suggestions, and we feel sure that any sense of humiliation they may experience at the time will be amply atoned for afterwards m the feeling that they had sought forgiveness, even though tardily, for a manifest injustice, and made what amends lay m their power for acting m a very injudicious and arbitary manner. The Maori Embassy is to receive consideration at the hands ot tho Imperial Legislature, but no undue interference will be sanctioned. Some amusement was caused at the last meeting of the Borough Council by a suggestion that fell from Cr Abrahams -that 12 copies of the amendments to the Municipal Corporations Act be procured for the use of the Borough Council. The Mayor m reply, looking significantly at the volatile and loquacious little Cr, reminded him of the truth of the saying that " a little learning was a dangerous, thing." On inquiry it turned out that there are four amendments, or m all 48 copies to bo procured. The Crs appeared to recognize the applicability of the Mayor's terse commentary, and a smile flickered round, while the little Cr fidgetted about and seemed somewhat ill at ease. s The Governors of New South Wales and Queensland, Major-Genpml Scratchley, the Premier of New South Wales, the Queensland Agent-General, the Victorian Defence Minister, tho officer lately commanding the forces m South Australia, with Colonels Eoberts and Dmry have all been knighted. The tender of Mr H. Dickel has been accepted by Mr L. G. West for the conversion of Gillett's buildings into a Salvation Army Barracks. Messrs Simmonds & Pegden, Dalziel, and|Ewing and Jonson were the other tenderers. Six men and three women have been arrested on suspicion of complicity m the Simpson's Road Bank robbery. Notes and a large sum m gold were found on them. The cart has also beon identified. A case of some interest to attendants at race meetings was called on at the | Nairier E.M. Court a few days ago. An investor m the totalisator on a winning horse at the recent race meeting at Petone, neglected to present his ticket on the same day, and on presenting it to the managers of the machine next clay was told ho was late. He thereupon took proceedings to test the legality of the managers' retention of the money, lie was nonsuited, on the ground that the Jokey Club, and not their servants as the managers of the totalisator were for the time — were the proper parties to look to for the money. — NewsThe Mayor is rather too wide-awake to b<>. caught napping. A few days ago there came unto him a fussy little member of the Finance Committee, with a proposal for him to tender for the sale by auction of a Borough reserve now advertised. But the Mayor was not likely to drop into a difficulty so simply. He reminded his loquacious intomewer, who was jabbering away at the rate of nineteen to th<"* dozen, that them were certain clauses m a certain Act that would preclude )r,a doing such work for the Council. His worship also gave some pretty straight shots, tvliich evidently told, as tlio garrulous littie customer Rpppdily beat a retreat with his tail considerably down. He went ro the wrong quarter when he expected Mr Major to run tln> risk of a pros-ontion for what would have been a palpable breach of the Act. It is to be hoped tho good advice the Mayor gave him will prove beurfiVial. Mr McNeil notifies to let, tho house lately occupied by Mr Wilson, of Mpkri-h "Wi 1 kin Bros. The building contains 5 rooms besides oulhoiißes, orchards, and paddock attached.
