Sir George Grey.

At a meeting of the Auckland Liberal Association a characteristic anecdote was related by a member of the Association m reference to Sir George Grey. While he was at Waitiirji lately, detained, there by heavy ijalos for a few days, a settler arrived from Foxtou, Mstnawntu, and .luring a convention, mentioned the following interesting incident : —It at jijtpeuiv that, this gentleman, wl o is now a person of i/tinssde'-abie inraiiF, ua-l himself and >f unity m conifoi table ehcu instances, was foi seven years employed m some capacity on the island of Kawau, and was so engaged during the hist absence of Sir George Grey m England. -Strange enough to say, the very night before Sir George Grey returned, the man's lic.uso was Imrued to the ground. He lost all- that belonged to him. Captain Holt, who was then acting as manager on the island, paid him his wages up to date, and Sir George expressed his sincere sympathies with his loss, but stated that he did not feel able to assist him at that; time m a pecuniary way, but trusted, he would ere long meet with friend!* and recover the lor"s he had sustained. These good wishes wore soon realised, for on his arrival m Auckland he was assisted l>y friends who enabled him to settle on totue land* not far from the city. About two months after he had settled m the country, he was surprised at getting from Sir George Grey — through the post-office— a kindly letter, saying he was glad to hear he was exerting himself, and enclosing a cheque for £209, hoping he might find it oi some little use m helping him on and procuring him some few of the comforts he had lost by the fire at the Kuwait.
