A Lucky Chance.
Many years ago now a well-known ni^t obscure comedian, while -under an engagement at a theatre m. New York, took a faucy to a young -fellow who played m minor warts \n the dramas tlien, represented. One drfy after rehearsal, he invited him to dinner at a Broadway restaurant* After a good dinner the actor toalled for the bill, aqd, to, his dismay,' discovered that he hud no money., In changing hi* clothing m the morning he neglected to take the money \ from his discarded pantaloous. . ' • He told the yoiing fellow of the " fir "he was m, and asked him for A loan. I ■ Mortified and chagrined, he answer, ed that all he had was just sufficient to pay his fare home. Then thereto? called the restaurant keeeper^ and told him the truth about the money. The quickly excited man r»ve}3 and stormed at the comedian, saying that he bud resolved not to be swindled hy anyone, and that he should; send for the police. . •■ ,'. . At thix point a short, . Btous old gentleman stepped up to the proprietor, and said firmly :— " How dare you Mpeak to a gejitlemanin the way; you have done 1 } His mistake is a perfectly natural one, and such as might, occur to' any roan. I ashamed of yotl I'll dine no more m your house, nor permit; uiy friend* to do so m the future. Here tfckethw! ' and the old gentleman took a fifty dollar note from a fat wallet mid handed it to the discounted landlord, Buying, " Deduct the anrt>unt of the young man's bill and return me the cluinge." 'I The proprietor* apologies firere Unheeded.
