Tliis is becoming a very popular arm of the service, and its value is said to have, come prominently under . notice m the Soudan. The infantry foot drill is. ?aught, and the , fours formation is largely employed. In \ skirmishing; as infantry^ three men take ground . and the fourth is left m charge of u the horses, ..under coyer, of course, where the country admits of it. Tho rifle is of medium .sizej, ,andr when the man is mounted it is slung over the shoulder. Cavalry drill is also taught. The sword equipment is fixed to the saddle. The great, ja/1 vantage of the mounted infantry is that it ciin be utilised for bo many purposes, Deing capable of being detailed for scooting, skirmishing, or covering retirement. Bodies of men so equipped and armed may also be moved rapidly from point to point, and, m fact, m open country* it is coming to be recognised as the arm of the service.
