A[l the defence preparations are now completed. The s.s. Maessillia is completed as a cruiser, and the John Elder is undergoing alterations. Brisbane, May 8. The report of the Polynesian Commission showd that the recruiting system has led to great abuses. The cases of the Clara, Lizzie, and Hopeful disclose a record of treachety, iucluding kidnappingand murder. The Government are determined to return the whole of the islanders introduced. Twenty-five out of the hundred boxes of salmon ova received turned out a splendid success. Three-fourths of the ova are alive and m excellent condition.
