Protection v. Free Trade.
The bon. Mr Ballance has written to Mr -Winter, secretary f of the Wairau Land League, expressing bis satisfaction at the formation of the League, but dissenting- sorirewhat from one of its priuoiples<-Free-trade. The honorable gentleman, m the course of a long letter, says : — " Now m a«* king these questions and suggesting thexo considerations, I at once say that lam not a Frve Trader, but hid a Protectionist, to the extent at least of what was advocated by John Stuart Mill m reference to the protection of new industries m young countrii's."
