VALUATION ROLLS.
Applications are invited m another column, from persons willing to accept and capable of undertaking the duties of valuator, for the compilation of The Property Tax rolls. This assessment only takes place once m three years, and it is important that the rolls should be more complete m the future than they have been m the past. The incompleteness of the Property Tax roll (writes the Waipawa Mail) has really been the cause of the difficulties that have been so much complained of lately m connection with the County Council, and th'e informal election at Norsewbod was due chiefly to the same cause. Clerks of County Councils and Road Boards, are supposed to compile their rate-books from the valuation roll supplied by the Property Tax Commissioner. They do so, and the result is that the names of a large number of persons who represent property do not appear. Then the election comes round, and those who are justly en- , titled to vote are unable to do so. The opinion recently given by the resident magistrate was that the Council roll alone should be used for an individual licensing district. Everyone knows that the County roll is not a complete one,' and the consequence is some of the rate-
I payers are disfranchised. The omis- | sions arc no fault of the clerks j of the local bodies, for their duties I are plain enough. The remedy at i present lies with those whose names do not appear, but alterations have to be made before a certain date, or left for a whole year. If valuation rolls were properly compiled, with suitable facilities for alterations being made as required, through the transfer of property. &c, road board rolls would be identical with those of the County, and there would be very much less trouble.
