Alcohol on the Heart.
Dr N T . W. Richardson, of London says :— " I was able to convey a considprHble amount of conviction to au intelligent scholar by a simple experiment. The scholar, was singing the praises of the « ruddy bumper,' and xayias? he could not {jot through the day without, it, when I said to him, * Will yon he good enongh to feel jny pulse hh I stand he«e?' He did *«o. I said ' Count i* carefully; what does it say V * Your pulse says 74/ I then sat down m a chair, and asked him to co ant it again. He di^ so and a«id, pulse has gone down to 70/ I then lay down on the lounge and said, • Will you tako it again ?' He repH«d, « Why, its only 64; what an extraordinaiy thing !' 1 then said, * When you lie down at night, i that is the way nature gives your heart rest. You know nothing about it, but that beating overall is resting to that extant; and, if you reckon it up, it iB a great de*l of rest, because m lying down the heart i< .doing 10 .strokes Jens a minute. Multiply that by 60, and i» is 600 ; multiply it by eight hours, and within a fraction it is 5000 strokes different. And as the heart is 'throwing six ouiicum of blood at every • stroke, it makes a difference of 30,000 onnees of lifting during the nijfht. Wl»m L lie down at nighi without any nlcoh<»I } that v the rest my heart get*. But when you tako your wine or gr«»g you do ; not allow tb:»t rest, for the influence of alcohol is to increase the number of strokes, and instead of getting this ra-<t yon put on something like 15,000 extra strokes, and the result is y«»u rise up v«ry "vmly and unfit for tln> next day's woi k till voh have tukon a little more of the « »u«My Immper,' which y.<u say is the soul. of man be-, low."— Gruiili'ird'tf Journal.
