Government have under consideration a circular from Mr Dalley, Colonial Secretary of New South Wales, asking the colonies to compensate private owners from loss sustained through any action of a hostile nation, but no determination has been arrived at as the Government considers that a question which might render the colony responsible for heavy liabilities should first receive the sanction of Parliament. When the Militia are called out it will be only single men, from 15 to 30, and these will have to undergo a certain number of hours' drill m the year. The Native Land Disposition Bill is m course of preparation, arid will be circulated before the opening of Parliament. It is proposed that all the native lands of the colony shall be dealt with through the agency of boards established m the various districts, but the lands are to be strictly, dealt Avith under the Land Laws of the colony. Each board js to consist of three members,' the chairman of the Native Committee to be ex officio member of the board. There is to be a local board for every large block of land, and m cases where there are 100 owners they may appoint a committee to make representations to the board. . The new Land Bill has been printed. It is very voluminous, and consolidates all existing land laws of the colony, and repeals twenty-six acts and ordinances. The Premier returns to-morrow from the South. The Native Minister has received a report from Parihaka that the statements that the natives were threatening Europeans is without the slightest foundation. Surveys for three more sections of the North Island Main Trunk Railway are being pushed on, and the Government hope to have the contracts out shortly. One section is 15 miles from the present contract at Te Awamutu. and the second is tleveiymiles from .the present contract at Marton/and the third is a tunnel con--tract about the middle of the line.
