The steamer Gleneler and the sailing vessels "Waitenaata and Gazelle returned from Kawau, being unsuccessful m the : attempt to get off the stranded steamer j Macgregor. It was unsafe where she was lying 1 to take sailing vessels. It is probable that a further attempt will be made to-morrow. Sir George Grey delivers an address under the auspices of the Liberal Association on Monday next. The Mercantile Marine Association invite the co-operation of the Chamber of Commerce m considering the position recently taken up by the seamen and lumpers of the Union, and its effects upon the trade of the port. Captain Fayenz, of the Austrian corvette Saida, was here m the Nevada with Dr Hochstetter m 1858. He was then a midshipman. The Mayor paid him an official visit to-day. N"ew Plymouth. May 7. The Taranaki Herald's Urenui correspondent writes as follows : — All the Natives here, together with their visitors from the Chatham Islands, have left for Parihaka. They take also take all preserved eels and birds that come from the Chatham Islands and £133 m money as an offering to Te Whiti. Gisborne, Mi\y 7. The schooner Comet, which went aground m the river, has been got off. J.NVEROA.RGILL, May 7. An Irish Volunteer Corps has been formed here, with a present membership of sixty-four.. It has been decided to ask the Government to accept its services. Mr J. Neil, head-master of the Gore School, has received the appointment of Secretary to the Education Board, for which seventy applications were sent m. O AU abu, May 7. Mr E. S. Lees, an old and respected resident m this district, was found dead i m his room last night. Deceased, who waß about and apparently m his usual state of health last evening, leaves a large family of young childron. Dunedin, May 7. A caucus of Ofcago members of both Houses will be called on Saturday to consider the best means to adopt to ensure a more vigorous prosecution of the Otago Central Bailway.
