W ellington - Manawatu Railway.
The Home correspondent of the Ofcago Daily I'imes, writing from London on the 18th March, says : — It appears that the Government are quietly but vigorously buying tip m London the debentures of the Manawatu Bail way Company, which seems to foreshadow the intention of taking that line ove"r from the shareholders. Some four or five hundred thousand pounds' worth of debentures bearing 5 per cent, for 25 years are held, and very largely m England. Of course m the event of the line being taken over, those bearing the endorsement of the colony, as they necessarily should, would not be then picked up for a trifle, and they should have to run their course of a quarter of a century, a good dividendpaying and secure investment as debentures go now. Henco the necessity of doing it sub rosa, and the Government have taken all requisite precautions to provide against the secret leaking out. However, the Government are like the sex angelic, and can't keep secrets. Hence it is that debenture holders have, vulgarly speaking, smelt the rat, and I learn that the bonds feel shy.
