Notes from Otaki.
(Post Correspondent.)
Another railway works pay-day took place on Saturday last, mostly on the line. Shortly after .6 p.m. a rush set m for the township, which whs kept m an uproar until the small hours of Sunday morning. Nothing but fighting from 7 p.m. on Saturday until Sunday morning, and not being aati.-fied, disturbances thj on »hont thac day. Constable Carr could do nothing. It was .something ootrageous, especially on Sunday evening, i'vee fighting all round. I can compare it to nothing but dog fighting. One man had his front teeth kicked out, others handfuls of wbiskeivs pulled and torn away l»y the teeth, and a lot of mad drunken navvies jumping round yelling and hoot.iug. Our larrikins cleared, and as tor any attempt to quell the rows, ifc won Id have been a foolhardy man who "*onld have tried and would most certainly have been the cause of a general uproar. I may state that the township is very quiet all through the month until pay day comes rouud. We are all m dread of the noxL pay day (cud of May), when there w;|| be a great number of native* here attending the Native Lands Court : and without the h^-lp from Wellington of smie m.>re police, theio will probably be a. disturbance,
