The Orepuki Railway, sanctioned fifteen years ago by the Provincial Government, and commenced eleven years back, was opened for traffic to-day, when an excursionn train, carrying 650 passengers from Invercargill and Riverton, passed safely over the line to the terminus at Hirstfield. The district is rich m gold and minerals, but hap hitherto been almost inaccessible, except on horseback or on foot. The line is eighteen miles m length from Kirerton, and forms the extreme sud of the . New Zealaud Railways. Dunedin, May 5. . The National Insurance Company have declared au interim dividend at the rate of 15 per cent per annum. It is reported that the banks have reduced the price of gold 6d per ounce. Chrjstchwrcd:, May 5. The workmen employed m three of the boot factories here went on strike today. The demand is one for an increase of wages, and it is not likely the employers will give way. Yesterday two cases of salmon ova, brought by Mr Farr from' England, were placed m the hatching house, and found to be excellent condition, not more than 2 per c-nt being bad.
