Mr James Lain], of Wanganui, who has returned from a Homo tour, met with a few old Wangaimitea m the course of his travels. At Adelaide he \ aw Mr Godwin, who had just been appointed to the editorship of a leading daily m that city, and seemed m good health and spirits. While at Suez Mr Laird met Captain Andrews, formerly of Waitotara', and both gentlemen bad an enjoyable chat about old times. The Melbourne Argas speaks of Henry George's book on " Progress and Poverty ,' as the Koran delivered by the San Francisco prephnt of mobs of irreconcilsables, who don't care a button about the qneatiou of private ownership of land* but who do object to ownership of anything by anybody but themselves. The A.J.C. Champagne Stakes won by the Hon. J. White's.Chester filly Uralla, provided a series of remarkable coincidences. The Hon. J. White owned Bargo, the winner last year ; there were half-a-dozen starters ; Tom Hales was on the winner ; and the time was exactly the same, lln. 17fs.
Whilst carting the big. guns (says a Wellington paper) from the A.C Barracks to the xftmf for transport to H aswell Point a Curious accident occurred. The Oamara Mail says that the New South Wales Covernnient have purchased from a local runholder a thousand head of cattle, at L 7 10s per head. It is intended to convert the lot into preserved meat, to •be forwarded to the Soudan. Things appear to bo m a very bad state m Marton. An open air meeting of the unemployed was to have been held last evening. Mails for the United Kingdom per s.s. Kaikoura will close at Palmerston to-mor-row at 7.45 p.m. The Militia is to have plenty of Officer element about when called out if the Taranaki News is correct m its statement, as that journal says :•— "•The following officers will '-be required for the militia when called out : — Two field ofI fleers, one Captain, -and two subalterns ! f or each company."- This is "piling 1 'em on " with a vengeance and no mistake. : " We are requested to .remind the public that nominations foiy the Handicap Hurdles and Birthday" Handicap, will be received, addressed to the Secretary, at the Commercial Hotel, Palmerston North, up to Saturday nest, the 9th instant at, 9 p.m. A correspondent writing to the Auckland Star on felo de se verdicts, asks what satisfaction is obtained by " carting an inanimate piece of clay at the dead hour of midnight to the cross-roads, and enacting the senseless "mummery" laid down by statute ? He points oiit that the law is satisfied here, that the body should be placed m the unconsecrated part of the cemetery instead of at the oross-roads* The correspondence arises out of the McKelvie affair, and the writer argues that the very act of self-destruc-tion is sufficient proof of a deranged mind, and therefore shows that the deceased committed the act while temporarily deranged. . . j •• '■ The prospect of ' war has apparently aroused the patriotic spirit of others beside our volunteers. This 'is,, the way the poets break out on such occasions : — " England was old England When Eussia was a pup ; And England will be England still When Kussia's busted up," After the experience that has been ! gained of late, we think that gentlemen who conduct consultations should be careful not to divulge the names of holders of tickets, especially when the success of the latter depend upon a horse winning a race. It is not' pleasant to be black-mailed for half the prize, by the ■owner of the likely horse threatening to scratch him for the event as an alternative. — Exchange. We regret to hear of the death of Mrs Morgan Carkeek, which occurred at Otaki on Monday morning, after the unfortunate lady had given birth to twins, one of whojn also died. The late Mrs Carkeek was universally esteemed and liked by residents of the district m which she lived, and deep sympathy- is felt for the bereaved husband and family m the sad trouble which has overtaken them. The death oceurrod very suddenly i as the deceased was m the township on a visit to her sister the day before, — Foxton paper. At tiie Wanganui R.M. Court on Tuesday, the case against C. S. Cross was called, but the. defendant did not i appear, being on board the Kennedy, then outside. Inspector James applied for a remaiul tiJI Monday next, bail to be enlarged till that time.
