(united prkss association.) Dunkdin, May 1. Four hundred feet of space has been applied for m the Home Industry Branch of the Industrial Exhibition. The number of exhibitors is forty. There are ten applicants m the Art Branch. The N.Z. Agricultural Company's homesteads, &c, at Waimea did not elicit a bid at auction to-day. At the opening of the University, which passed off with much less disturbance than tbe previous year, it was announced that the medical students were making arrangements for an ambulance corps, open to all members of the University. Mr Booth's reception meeting was crowded, and he was welcomed by the Mayor and others. . Ifvercargill, May 1. The Education Board has received about seventy applications for the office of secretary, at a yearly salary of ±'250. The Invercargill Chamber of Commerce has resolved to ask Government to make the experiment of low fares on Mr Vaile's scheme oh the Bluff line. At the Supreme Court to-day, Mr Justice Williams gave -judgment m appeal heard m Dunedin, Brossan v. Stewart. This was an application for a mandamus calling on the Resident Magistrate for the Southland District to hear an affiliation case which had been dismissed on its merits. Defendant's solicitor got a certificate of dismissal, and objected to further proceedings. The judgment was for defendant, with i>lo 10s costs. The information that plaintiff asked should be heard was under the Destitute Persons Belief Act, 1877. CHnisTCHfMtCH, May 1. John Green, carpenter, of the barque Cooleen, was to-day committed for trial on a charge of stabbing a ship's apprentice named Leslie. Auckland, May 1. The law examinations are not yet completed, but the following have passed, and their names have been forwarded to the Chief Justice :— Lawson, Killen, Kerr, Nicholson, H. Humphries, Farquhar, Mcßae, Skeen, Bathgate, Blythe, Clayton, McCallum, McDonald, Anderson, and Skerret. beveral candidates did not pass. The cases of two candidates are yet under consideration. Masterton, May 1. The salmon ova, ex Eaikoura, which arrived here last night, proved m splendid condition on opening the boxes. New Plymouth, May 1. The Supreme Court civil sittings commenced this morning. The case of Wailath v. Berbier (Convent case) was quashed, on legal points, m favor of the ladies of the Convent. The case of Espagne v. Bank of New South Wales is being proceeded with.
