The Remenyi Concert.
fChristchurch Star, April 10.J
For the last appearance m Christchurch of the celebrated Hungarian violinist, perhaps the most attractive programme he had ever presented to the music-loving public had been arranged. The molto allegro appassionato of Mendelssohn, which was the first of M. Remenyi's solos, was given with wonderful fire and vigour, especially m the final movement— one of striking originality. It is showed plainly that it is not true, as is often asserted, that Remenyi's great powers do not extend into the higher regions of his art, but are bounded by the popular selections with which he has mostly favoured his audiences here. The same thing was further shown, though to a lesser degree, m Beethoven's magnificent sonata for violin and piano, m which Mrs von Haast's well-proved skill as an accompanyst was fully tested. In the second part, a very charming and finished composition Andalusian dance and love-duet by Remenyi, himself, showed the player's creative as well as executive abilities most favourably. It was tuneful throughout, the suave, graceful melody of the dance, and the tender strains of the love-duet were alike very taking. The audience insisted on an encore." The famous.Rakoczy March was the concluding item. Miss Downing and Mr Himmer gave their usual vocal solos, and Mr Luckstone played the andante and allegro from the Sonata Pathdfcique with more than his usual success.
