Volunteers ot the district under Colonel j Lyon, officer commanding the districL } Three hundred and fifty mustered on % ! short notice, of all arms, and were taken j m steamers to the North Shore, whare? they manoeuvred to repel imaginary at- ; tacks by landing parties at.tw© points, afe j Takapuna. A 40-pounder Armstrong: i on the North Head defences took part | m the defence of Takapuna beach. The { customs launch represented the landing- > party. There were 4000 spectators on. : the J? laestaff Hill and North Head, whowitnessed with great interest the mimic* fight on the plain below.
