SPORTING NEWS.
The Referee m the course of an article m its last issue says : — Supposing, say, the clubs were to contribute £2000, made up as follows : — Canterbury Jockey Club, £250; Dunedin Jockey Club, £250; Auckland Racing Club, £250; Hawkes Bay Jockey Club, .£250; Wellington Racing Club, £200; Wellington Jockey Club, £200 ; Taranaki Jockey Club, .£150 ; Wanganui Jockey Club, £150 ; Marton-Rangitikei Jockey Club, £100; and the Nelson, Marlborough , South Canterbury, Oainaru, Takapuna, Wairarapa, and smaller clubs could help make up the balance of the £2000. We would not confine the race to any one district, but the locale should change year by year, and the clubs could share any profits m the ratio of their contributions. We feel sure there would be a large entry for such an event — provided, of course, owners found that there was something substantial to run for at a moderate cost — and that sportsmen from all parts of the colony would flock to witness the decision of what we would propose to call the • l Britain of the South Handicap.' '
