Mr Johnston, manager of the New Zealand Clothingi/actory, is at present exceedingly busy opening, up largo consignments of new goods m great variety. The Bank Chambers' public room is being universally used by all the public societies, for lodge meetings, assemblies, musical gatherings, &c. Tho compartment is both equally and comfortably fitted up and visitors from Wellington, Auckland, and other large towns have remarked upon the excellence of the accomptodation. The charge for use is also reasonable. Mr Gardes is kept busy attending to orders for supplies of fruit. The excellent quality of the stock is becoming generally known and the proprietor's obliging and courteous address to purchasers will no doubt induce continued custom. We understand that the hymns and anthems to he rendered at the Wesleyan Church harvest home thanksgiving services to-morrow evening have been under special rehearsal by the choir for some days past. The Wanganui people have organized a chamber of commerce We learn that a criminal information has been laid against a former wellknown resident of Wanganui, wh© was for some years m business m the town. The charge, wo believe, is one of misappropriation of money. — Chronicle. Mr James A'Court's house at Sandon was yesterda}' totally destroyed by fire. Neither house nor contents were insured. A man named Thomas McCreedy, recently m custody as a lunatic, tried to commit suicide at Lees ton, Canterbury, yesterday by cutting his throat. He lies m a precarious state.
